On August 20, 1994, Tyke, an elephant in the Honolulu Zoo, killed his trainer and ran out of the arena into the city, where he was shot and killed. Patricia heard about the incident while in San Diego and in response to the mistreatment and subsequent death of Tyke, she created this quilt block. Tyke has become a symbol of animal rights.
