Benjamin R. Civiletti has focused his professional practice of law on commercial litigation, banking, white-collar crime, government regulation, and corporate governance. He is both a trial and appellate advocate. He has conducted numerous product liability cases; successfully prosecuted and defended statutory and constitutional claims, and conducted special investigations growing out of derivative suits, governmental proceedings, and a state impeachment resolution. In addition, he has developed a practice in alternative dispute resolution, working successfully as a mediator, facilitator, master and arbitrator in many commercial and tort disputes to achieve faster and more cost-efficient justice. During the tenure of President Jimmy Carter Benjamin R. Civiletti served as Assistant Attorney General (under Griffin Bell) from 1977 through 1978 and as Attorney General of the United State from 1979 until 1980. Some of the issues Mr. Civiletti was associated with during his career include the Maryland Savings and Loans Crisis, the Billy Carter Libya investigation, ABSCAM, The Iran Hostage Crisis, the 1980 boycott of the Olympic Games, and the investigation of presidential staff accused of wrongdoing. Benjamin R. Civiletti was the first Attorney General of the United States to confront a government shutdown and budget battle. As a leader of the Maryland legal community Benjamin R. Civiletti has served on several local and state-wide task forces and investigations. These include the Governor’s plan for Welfare Reform in Maryland and, in the wake of the death of College Park Basketball Star Len Bias, the Governor’s Task Force to Investigate Student Drug Use in higher education in Maryland.
